Description
Mannitol Salt Agar is used for the selective isolation and enumeration of staphylococci from clinical or non-clinical specimens. Peptones and beef extract provide essential growth factors such as nitrite, carbon and trace elements. The high concentration of sodium chloride results in the partial or total inhibition of the growth of all bacteria, except Staphylococcus. Fermentation of mannitol, shown by a change in the color of the phenol red indicator, helps differentiate staphylococcal species. The neutral red indicator changes color with the breakdown of lactose. It is available in a 100ml vial and is stored at 8-25?C.
